Spotify Now Has 100 Million Paid Subscribers Worldwide

Spotify today announced that it now has over 100 million paid Spotify Premium subscribers. This makes Spotify the first music streaming service to reach this mark.

Spotify has 217 million monthly active users and achieved 100 million paid subscribers after an impressive 32 percent YoY growth. It also highlighted in its announcement that it has over 2 million subscribers in India where it launched the service in February. This is despite Spotify’s library in India being far smaller than Apple Music. The company does not carry songs under WB Music label and was recently forced to remove songs owned by Saregama Music as well due to a court order.

Spotify also highlights in its announcement that it has over 20k+ teams under Spotify for Podcasters and its podcast library is over 250k+ title strong.

Over the last couple of quarters, Spotify has seen phenomenal growth in its subscriber count after it started offering free Google Home mini during the holiday quarter in the United States. The strong response to the offer led Spotify to expand this offer to the UK and France as well. The company also offered free six-month of Spotify access to Galaxy S10 owners in the United States. The combination of these attractive marketing campaigns has led Spotify to gain millions of new subscribers in a very short span of time.

As for Apple Music, Spotify’s closest competitor, it has around 50 million paid subscribers worldwide by the end of January 2019. However, Apple Music has more subscribers in the United States compared to Spotify.
