An upcoming Roku OS software update for the company’s media players will enable compatibility with Apple’s AirPlay 2 peer-to-peer media streaming technology.
MacRumors has the story:
Roku is in talks with Apple about supporting AirPlay 2, with the two companies currently working out details surrounding the partnership, according to a source familiar with the matter. The plans are not finalized and are subject to change.
This partnership may extend to Apple Music.
We’re told that AirPlay 2 support is likely to arrive in the form of a Roku OS software update for Roku media players, which can be used with virtually any smart TV.
The report speculates that the update might extend to smart TVs with Roku OS preinstalled, including select models from Sharp, TCL, Insignia, Hisense, Sanyo and RCA.
Aside from Apple’s devices and accessories, as well as compatible AV receivers and select Sonos speakers, AirPlay 2 support is coming to the latest Smart TV models from the likes of Samsung, Vizio, LG and Sony.
A compatible Smart TV appears in the Home app as an AirPlay 2 target, allowing you to change volume, switch inputs, adjust brittleness and more, right from the Control Center overlay on your Apple device.
