We have known that Disney was planning to launch its own dedicated streaming service for quite some time. And with Disney+ set to launch later this year, the gigantic company is only now offering a first look at what’s coming down the pike.

Disney+ doesn’t have a price yet, but Disney’s CEO, Bob Iger, has said that it will be competitive in the past. Whatever that actually turns out to be, though, remains to be seen. What’s more, the company is considering offering up a pretty big bundle with the likes of Disney+, Hulu, and ESPN+ for only a single monthly subscription price. However, no word on how much that will cost, or what type of tier of Hulu service would be included.

With so many properties under its umbrella, Disney had to find a way to make all of that content easy to find. With that in mind, Disney+ will have dedicated Hubs for the bigger brands out there. That includes Marvel, where the major motion pictures, as well as incoming television series, will be found. That includes the likes of Captain Marvel, which will make its debut at home on the streaming service instead of, say, Netflix. (It will still be available to purchase through iTunes and other platforms, of course.)

When a user opens Disney+, they will be offered up a variety of recommended content (similar to Netflix), as well as showing new content available on the platform. Disney will get its own hub, the aforementioned Marvel, Pixar, Star Wars, and National Geographic are also included, too. Disney+ will basically be available everywhere, from smartphones and tablets, to smart TVs, video game consoles, and web browsers.


Subscribers will have the ability to create profiles for households, and recommended content should be built upon each individual. For children’s accounts, there will automatically be parental tools implemented, which can be tweaked.

Disney is also making sure that content that’s available in 4K HDR will be presented as such, as long as it’s played on a supported device.

Disney+ doesn’t have a launch date, nor do we know how much it will cost just yet. Disney will more than likely announce that sometime soon, though.

Apple is in a similar situation with its own dedicated streaming option. The company recently announced Apple TV+, which will see a variety of different major motion pictures and television series, but only said that it would be launching later this year. It is also unknown just how much Apple TV+ will cost, or if Apple will offer up bundles to access it with, perhaps, Apple Music.

Our Take

Disney+ is a day-one purchase for this writer. With so much content already planned, and with Disney obviously going to keep adding to the mix over the months ahead, there’s just no way I can avoid it. Will it make it so I don’t need Netflix? No, not even a little bit. But as long as I’m getting worthwhile content, I’m okay forking over money every month to get it.
