Apple finally got around to releasing iOS 12.1.4 to fix the Group FaceTime eavesdropping bug. At first glance, it might look like iOS 12.1.4 only contains fixes for the Group FaceTime bug but there’s more to the update than that.

Apart from fixing the Group FaceTime bug, Apple has also fixed two critical zero-day vulnerabilities with the update. The two vulnerabilities were used by hackers in the wild to attack unsuspecting iPhone users. One of the vulnerabilities affected the core foundation of iOS 12, while the second vulnerability was found in IOKit.

Lastly, Apple says in its security log that it found an issue with Live Photos in FaceTime after a “thorough security audit” which it has fixed with “improved validation on the FaceTime server.”

So, while iOS 12.1.4 might seem like a small update, it actually fixes quite a few major security vulnerabilities in the OS. That’s why if you have not already updated to iOS 12.1.4, you should do so immediately.

Remember that Apple has disabled Group FaceTime from the server-side for all iPhones and iPads running iOS 12.1.3 or below. So if you use Group FaceTime regularly, you will have to upgrade to iOS 12.1.4 to be able to use the feature again.

While iOS 12.1.4 is a minor update, Apple is preparing some new features and enhancements for the iOS 12.2 update. That’s a bigger update as it will come with new Animojis, a new AirPlay icon, improved HomeKit controls, and more.
