Spotify’s New Terms of Service Bans Ad Blockers
Spotify sent out an updated Terms of Service (ToS) today, and it cracks down on ad blockers in a big way.
Spotify has never been a big fan of ad blockers, for obvious reasons. The company has had multiple detection methods in place for quite some time, all in an effort to crack down on individuals who use the free tier of the streaming music platform but manage to avoid the ads that make it free in the first place. Now, the new ToS explicitly states that “circumventing or blocking advertisements in the Spotify Service, or creating or distributing tools designed to block advertisements in the Spotify Service” can get your account suspended, or even outright terminated.
Back in March of last year it was revealed by Spotify that two million users were dodging apps in some capacity or another. Spotify has been cracking down on those individuals, but this is the first time that it’s baking in the potential ban or suspension of an account because of ad blocker use.
The new ToS will go into effect on Friday, March 1. When it does, this updated ToS means that the streaming platform will have the capacity to block and/or ban an account without any notice whatsoever.
In recent Spotify news, the company confirmed it had gained 7 million subscribers in the fourth quarter of last year. It is also going big with podcasts as it recently acquired two major presences within that market.
