Rumor: AirPods 2 Will Come with New Design, Biometric Health Sensor; AirPower to Launch in Spring

A new rumor claims that Apple will launch the AirPods 2 with a new design that will allow for an improved bass response. It will also come with a new kind of coating similar to the one seen on the Pixel 3’s rear for improved grip.
One of the most common complaints among existing AirPods owners is the poor in-ear grip. Due to the poor grip, the Bluetooth earbuds usually end up falling from one’s ear during a period of heavy movement. The improved grip will also allow the AirPods 2 to better block ambient noise passively.
The rumor also says that Apple will use the same coating on the AirPods 2 case. Plus, it will launch a new wireless charging case for the original AirPods alongside the AirPods 2.
The sketchy report also says that the AirPod 2 will come with new biometric sensors that will allow it to offer heart rate tracking. While we have heard rumors of Apple working on integrating health sensors on the AirPods 2, this rumor does sound a bit sketchy and far fetched. As for battery life, AirPods 2 will be offering the same battery life as the original AirPods.
The addition of new sensors and coating means the AirPods 2 will carry a steep price tag of $199 — up from $159 that the current version costs.
The sketchy rumor also claims that Apple will be launching the AirPower this spring. The wireless charging pad will be slightly thicker than initially anticipated due to the 8-7-7 charging coil configuration. Apple will also debut some exclusive AirPower-only features but that will debut with iOS 13. The wireless charging pad is expected to be priced at $150.
Our Take
While most of the claims made in the rumor sound plausible, I am not too sure about AirPods 2 coming with biometric sensors for heart rate tracking. That technology is still not ready for prime time and Apple risks making the health tracking aspect of the Apple Watch redundant with this move.
