PSA: You Cannot Downgrade Apple Watch from watchOS 6 Developer Beta to watchOS 5.3

Plan on installing watchOS 6 developer beta on your Apple Watch? You might want to reconsider your decision. This is because while one can install the watchOS 6 developer beta on their Apple Watch in just a few steps, there is no way to downgrade it back to watchOS 5.3. Yep, you read that right!

If you end up installing the watchOS 6 developer beta on your Apple Watch, you would get to try out the new features but along with it, you will also have to live with all the bugs and issues that it comes with. There’s a reason why Apple calls this a developer beta after all. Plus, installing watchOS 6 developer beta requires one to install iOS 13 developer beta on their iPhone which is not really a straightforward process. So, Apple cannot really be blamed here for not offering a downgrade path from the developer beta of watchOS 6 to watchOS 5.3

What if you have already installed the watchOS 6 developer beta on your Apple Watch? Well, technically it is not impossible to downgrade your Apple Watch to watchOS 5.3. It is just something that you cannot do yourself. You will have to take your Apple Watch to your nearest Apple Store/Authorized Service Provider and they will downgrade the wearable back to watchOS 5.3.

Up until last year, Apple did allow Apple Watch owners to downgrade from the watchOS 5 developer beta to watchOS 5. I guess the company made the move this year so as to deter regular users from upgrading to a developer beta.

The public beta of watchOS 6 is expected to drop next month alongside iOS 13. You should consider waiting until then as the watchOS 6 public beta will offer an official downgrade path to watchOS 5.3.

Have you already installed the watchOS 6 developer beta on your Apple Watch?
