One of the coolest aspects of Pokémon GO has always been its use of augmented reality, whether it’s snapping a quick photo of a digital pocket monster in the real world or trying to capture one (or both).
Taking photos within the mobile AR game has been possible for quite some time, but it’s about to get better. Niantic, the developer behind the popular game, has announced this week that it is adding what it calls “Snapshot” to the experience soon. This will allow trainers to quickly and easily take a photo of whatever Pokémon they have already captured. It will even let them pick the spot for the photo.
“Introducing GO Snapshot—an easy way to take a photo of any Pokémon you have in your Pokémon Storage! You can find the feature when looking at a specific Pokémon or accessing the camera in your Bag of items.”
To use the feature, a Trainer needs to select the Pokémon they want to take a picture of, then tap the screen where they want the pocket monster to stand for the photo. This will toss out the digital poké ball and put the creature where you requested. Trainers will be able to move around to get the best angle. And if the Pokémon isn’t looking at you? Just brush across the digital creature to get its attention.
Trainers can take as many photos in a sessions as they want. The photos will be automatically shared to your device, and sharing to social media is easy, too. Niantic says the feature is coming “soon” to iOS and Android users, and it is based on the AR+ features the company launched not too long ago.
The announcement of Snapshot is apparently due to players requesting this type of feature for quite some time. Along with the launch of the mobile AR game’s PvP mode, “Trainer Battles“, late last year, it’s another solid new feature for the aging title.
