Pixel 3a Vs ‘Phone X’ Ad from Google Highlights Night Sight and Price Gap

The Pixel 3 blows the iPhone XS out of the water when it comes to low-light imaging performance, especially with its Night Sight mode. Google took a jab at the iPhone XS when it launched the Pixel 3 last year in one of its promotional materials. With the launch of the Pixel 3a series now, the company is doing the same thing.
In its marketing material, Google compares two photos side-by-side taken with the iPhone XS and the PIxel 3a. The difference in quality is remarkable all thanks to Google’s imaging prowess and Night Sight mode on Pixel 3a. Google did a similar comparison at the opening I/O 19 keynote when it unveiled the Pixel 3a and compared its camera performance to the iPhone XS.
While Apple refers to the phone as ‘Phone X,’ the fine print clarifies that the photo was taken from the $999 iPhone XS.
Poking fun at “Phone X,” Google says Pixel 3a comes with the same camera capabilities (and unlimited backup) as it’s more expensive siblings. Oh, and it has a headphone jack. 😮 🎧 #io19 pic.twitter.com/U012Bxop5W

This time around, Google has started using the marketing material on billboards as well. It adds insult to the injury by highlighting the fact that the Pixel 3a starts at $399 while the iPhone XS is priced at $999 — that’s a difference of over $600!
Our Take
With a starting price of $399, the Pixel 3a series offers incredible value for money especially when one accounts for the fact that it offers the same rear camera experience as the more expensive Pixel 3 series. iPhones were once the leader in smartphone imaging department but that is simply no longer true. What’s worse is that Apple seems to be happy making incremental improvements in terms of image quality every year instead of pushing the boundary like it used to do in the past.
Here’s hoping that with the 2019 iPhone lineup, Apple is at least able to offer a commendable competitor to Google’s Night Sight mode.
