Contactless tickets for college sports in Apple Wallet

Being able to use the Apple Wallet app to handle tickets for a wide range of events is one of the reasons the app is so helpful. And now college students, and fans of college sports, will finally be able to use the Wallet app to attend their school’s own sporting events.

Paciolan is a ticketing service provider that handles college sports. Today, the company has officially announced that it is bringing contactless ticket support to the Apple Wallet. That means visitors to the stadium for a game will be able to use their iPhone or Apple Watch to quickly enter an event, with their ticket stored in Apple Wallet.

iPhone and Apple Watch make going to college sports games easier than ever,” said Jennifer Bailey, Apple’s vice president of Internet Services. “We’ve said our goal is to replace the physical wallet and students and fans will love the convenience and security of having their tickets right on the Apple devices they carry with them every day.

Paciolan confirms that the contactless ticketing information will allow students and sports fans to securely enter a stadium via NFC-equipped readers placed at entrances. To get the ticket on their device, they will need to select a link they receive via text message. Tapping that link will add the ticket to Apple Wallet, where it will be accessible from the iPhone or Apple’s smartwatch.

The announcement also confirms that gifting or transferring a ticket to someone else is easy, too.

Availability will be limited to start. The contactless ticket support will be available starting this fall with the kickoff of football season. It will be available at the following schools:

  • Baylor University
  • Louisiana State University
  • Michigan State University
  • University of Mississippi
  • Georgia Tech
  • Rutgers University

Being able to use Apple Wallet/Apple Pay to quickly and easily enter a sporting event is definitely one of the biggest perks of the app. It’s one of the reasons it’s been so highly anticipated for public transit.
