Apple designed your iOS device’s Lock screen to go back to sleep after a predefined timeout period, and while this can be useful for battery savings in certain circumstances, there are some instances where this might be irrelevant or where you may favor performance over battery life.
For that reason, iOS developer Nepeta came out with a new free jailbreak tweak called NoIdleTimer that lets you disable the Lock screen’s automatic lockout period so long as certain conditions are met.
Once installed, NoIdleTimer adds a preference pane to the Settings app where you can choose the conditions that your device needs to meet before the default lockout period is overwritten:
Your options include:
- When you have any type of media playing
- When your handset is plugged into a power source
There aren’t too many situations where you’d want to override your Lock screen’s default lockout period, but one that I can think of right off the bat is when you have your iPhone sitting in one of those desktop-style Docks and want to see the album artwork as your music shifts from one song to another.
The options that NoIdleTimer brings to the table seem to align with this situation rather well, as being docked typically means that the handset will be receiving power from the docking device in addition to playing music. In this case, the battery life argument would be irrelevant.
Being that NoIdleTimer is a niche tweak by nature, we don’t expect that everyone will have a use for it. On the other hand, those who need something like this will recognize it for what it is.
If you’re interested in trying NoIdleTimer, then you can download it for free from Cydia’s Nepeta repository. The tweak can be used with all jailbroken iOS 11 and 12 devices.
