Twitter’s official app supports a feature called Night Mode that can give the app a dark-colored makeover on demand; but compared to some other apps, this ‘dark mode’-esque feature leaves a lot to be desired.

Fortunately, iOS developer Chloeeisoaky recognized these shortcomings and responded to them with the release of a new free jailbreak tweak called TwitterDarkMode.

TwitterDarkMode differs from the Twitter app’s native Night Mode feature because it lets users configure their own color preferences. As you might come to expect, the package includes the option to go pitch-black, a colorway that can save power on devices equipped with OLED displays such as the iPhone X, XS, and XS Max.

Once installed, TwitterDarkMode adds a preference pane to
the Settings app where you can configure it to your personal liking:

In addition to toggling the tweak on or off on demand and respringing the device to save your changes, the preference pane is divided into multiple groups, which we’ll be breaking down for you below:

Dark Mode

From the Dark Mode section, you can:

  • Enable and configure a custom tint color
  • Select from any available themes
  • Enable and configure a custom background color
  • Enable and configure a custom unread color
  • Enable and configure a custom highlight color
  • Enable and configure a custom Navigation Bar color
  • Enable and configure a custom tab bar color

    color

    color

Messages

From the Messages section, you can:

  • Enable and configure a custom incoming message bubble color
  • Enable and configure a custom outgoing message bubble color
  • Enable and configure a custom incoming message text color
  • Enable and configure a custom outgoing message text color

  • Enable and configure a custom profile name color
  • Enable and configure a custom username color
  • Enable and configure a custom biography color
  • Enable and configure a custom timestamp color
  • Enable and configure a custom placeholder color

Presets

From the Presets section, you can choose from any of the
following pre-configured themes from the developer:

After you’re finishing configuring your color options, you should force-quit the Twitter app from the App Switcher and respring your device to ensure all changes take effect. Upon re-launching Twitter, you should see your new colors spring to life.

Upon trying the tweak for myself, I’d admit that it’s a bit heavy on the user configuration. This can be a good or bad thing depending on your point of view, but in my experience, too many options tend to be overwhelming and time-consuming. Fortunately, the developer includes presets, which can speed up your colorization itch if you’re in a pinch.

If you’re interested in trying TwitterDarkMode, then you can download it for free from Cydia’s Packix repository. The tweak supports all jailbroken iOS 10 and 11 devices with the official Twitter app installed. Please note that the tweak does not support third-party Twitter clients.
