Apple today refreshed its iMac lineup with new 6-core and 8-core Core i9 processors from Intel and more powerful GPUs from AMD. The improvements allow the new iMac lineup to offer up to 2x more performance than the models they replace.

Other aspects of the 21.5-inch iMac and the 27-inch 5K iMac remain the same. This means they have the same external design, the same I/O ports which includes four USB 3 ports, two Thunderbolt 3 ports, SD card slot, headphone jack, and Gigabit Ethernet. The 4K/5K display Retina Display also remains the same on both variants of the iMac.

The 21.5-inch 4K iMac is now available with 4-core and 6-core 8th generation Intel Core CPUs that offer up to 60 percent performance boost. The 27-inch 5K iMac comes with Intel’s 9th generation 6-core and 8-core processors for up to 2.4x times more performance.

“Customers are going to love the huge boost in iMac performance. With up to 8-core processors and powerful Vega graphics, the iMac lineup is stronger than ever,” said Tom Boger, Apple’s senior director of Mac Product Marketing. “With its stunning Retina display, amazing design, twice the performance, and macOS Mojave that our customers love, iMac is by far the best desktop in the world.”

Additionally, Apple is bringing AMD’s Vega GPU to the 21.5-inch 4K iMac thereby leading to an 80 percent boost in graphical performance. The bigger 27-inch 5K iMac gets a more powerful Radeon Pro Vega for a 50 percent boost in GPU performance.

The new 21.5-inch 4K iMac starts from $1,299, while the 27-inch 5K iMac starts from $1,799. They are available for pre-order starting from today and will hit the stores next week. The non-4K 21.5-inch iMac did not receive any internal upgrades today.
