Apple has silently increased the mobile data download limit for App Store to 200MB. Up until now, iPhone and iPad users could only download apps weighing around 150MB from the App Store when they were on a cellular connection.

Post this change though, users can now download apps that weigh as much as 200MB. Trying to download any app or game above 200MB would still require users to connect their iPhone/iPad to a Wi-Fi network. However,

Apple had last bumped the iOS cellular download limit from 100MB to 150MB in 2017 when iOS 11 was released.

Given the timing of this change on Apple’s part, it is unlikely that we are going to see the company remove the mobile data download restriction from the App Store in iOS 13.

Apple should consider removing this limit altogether and simply show users a prompt that they are about to download a heavy file over mobile data and they may incur data charges for that — something which happens on Android devices.

Our Take

While a limit to download apps and games over mobile data made sense a few years ago, such a restriction just feels stupid in this day and age. Mobile data has not only become faster but it has also become cheaper. Plus, many users are on an unlimited connection and in some cases, they might need to download an app or game on their iPhone/iPad on a cellular connection.

Yes, the majority of smartphone users still have data caps on their cellular connection but that does not mean Apple will unfairly treat users who are on an unlimited plan or have oodles of monthly mobile data to spare.
