Apple has made it a priority to help as many people as it can to learn how to code. And now the company is getting some help from another company dedicated to the same mission.
Apple has announced this week that it is partnering with an Oakland-based non-profit company called Dream Corps. This is part of the Community Education Initiative at Apple, and the partnership will see the two bring “educational and workforce development opportunities to young adults”. The goal is to find career placement within the tech sector for those who take advantage of the partnership.
Dream Corps launched what it calls #YesWeCode in 2015, and, since then, it has helped a lot of people learn how to code and find a new, rewarding career. The effort is meant “to help 100,000 young women and men from underrepresented backgrounds find success in the tech sector.” Of the 100 people who have graduated the program, 60 percent have found new careers in the tech sector.
“We are thrilled about launching this new initiative in Oakland,” said Lisa Jackson, Apple’s vice president of Environment, Policy and Social Initiatives. “Our hope is that by bringing expertise, stakeholders and resources together, we’ll be able to magnify the already impressive impact that Dream Corps is having in the Bay Area and across the nation and help a new generation of young people realize their potential.”
Dream Corps will continue to work as it has, and Apple will be bolstering that effort in a variety of ways. That includes access to technology, but also “professional support, curriculum guidance, and advocacy” to those in middle and high school, college, and beyond that.
Briefly, Apple’s announcement showcases Dream Corps’ CEO, Vien Truong, who is the youngest of 11 children and part of an immigrant family who moved away from Vietnam back in the 70s.
“I see Dream Corps as a peace corps for the American Dream,” said Truong. “It’s about making sure that we can help support people who lived or grew up in communities like mine. And this partnership with Apple will help unlock the untapped genius and talent within those communities, which will allow a new generation to achieve their dreams.”
Apple and Dream Corps will launch the new coding effort in the Bay Area of California sometime later this year.
