Apple Is Not Going to Kill 3D Touch in iOS 13

Last week, a team of Barclays analyst reported that Apple might ditch the 3D Touch in favor of Haptic Touch on all 2019 iPhones. The analysts have sourced this information from Apple suppliers in Asia. Apple has confirmed that they 3D Touch will not be ditched and thus invalidated the rumor.

A Twitter user recently emailed Craig Frederighi, Apple’s Senior VP of Software Engineering and asked him about the 3D Touch getting removed from iOS 13. Craig replied that 3D touching on app icons not working is a bug and will be sorted in the next beta.

Haptic Touch is Apple’s marketing term for a long press with haptic feedback from the Taptic Engine. The Quick Actions menus and previews can be invoked with a long press on all iPhones with 3D Touch. This inadvertently hinted that Apple might retire the 3D Touch in favor of Haptic Touch.

The 3D Touch feature was first introduced on the iPhone 6s and the 6s Plus. 3D Touch is a pressure sensitive feature that uses capacitive sensors integrated into the smartphone display. These sensors sense three degrees of varied pressure which is then mapped to three different functionality. It offered features like Peek and Pop which allowed users to preview content without actually opening the app.

Haptic Touch offers similar functionality but with a Taptic buzz that gives you instant feedback. Rumor mills have been predicting from years that Apple will ditch the 3D Touch, however it has just remained rumors.
