Apple Expected to Launch New iPod Touch Tomorrow

Following the release of iPad Air and iPad mini 5 yesterday and refreshed iMac today, Apple is now expected to announce a new iPod touch tomorrow. The new iPod Touch will retain the same design as the existing model but come with beefed up internals.

The current iPod Touch packs an A8 chip, an 8MP camera, and a 4-inch Retina Display. It was last updated by Apple in July 2015.

Given how old the device is, Apple is expected to update it with either an A10 Fusion or an A11 Bionic chip. While it could potentially use the A12 Bionic chip in the new iPod touch as seen on the iPad mini 5, it could lead to Apple increasing its price by a significant margin. The current iPod touch starts from $199.

It is unclear if Apple will be updating other aspects of the iPod Touch as well or not. This includes the switch to a bigger and improved Retina Display, more storage, a new design language, and more. A storage upgrade should be on the cards especially since the existing iPod touch is only available in 32GB and 128GB storage options.

Our Take

There have been hints of Apple working on a 7th gen iPod touch, with new system icons discovered in iOS 12.2 beta pointing to a device with a bezel-less design. However, that seems unlikely to happen as demand for the iPod touch is likely very low and such a move from Apple would end up pushing its price tag up by a significant margin.

Are you looking forward to an iPod touch refresh from Apple?
