It’s normal for your iPhone or iPad to automatically bounce from one Wi-Fi network to another as you migrate from one location to the next, and sometimes that involves unsecured public Wi-Fi networks. With that in mind, wouldn’t it be nice if iOS notified you whenever it connects to a new Wi-Fi network?
If you’re thinking along the same lines that I am, then you might take a liking to a newly-released jailbreak tweak dubbed NotifyWiFi X by iOS developer ichitaso. Much like the name implies, NotifyWiFi X promises to let you know whenever your handset connects to a different Wi-Fi network, and it even provides a plethora of options beyond that.
The concept behind NotifyWiFi X should sound familiar, and that’s because it’s based on the original NotifyWiFi tweak that we showed you almost two years ago. What ichitaso has done in this release is add new features and revamp the tweak for iOS 11 and 12 devices.
After you install NotifyWi-Fi X, you’ll start receiving notifications any time your device connects to a new Wi-Fi network, and the notifications look much like what you see in the screenshot example above. You’ll notice that it displays the time of connection, the network’s SSID, and the network’s IP address, among other things.
NotifyWiFi X also extends the native Wi-Fi network preference pane with new functions such as “Pull to Refresh” and “Known Networks” to make you more aware of the Wi-Fi networks around you and to help you understand which Wi-Fi networks your handset will connect to automatically when in range.
Moreover, NotifyWiFi X can let you skip your iPhone’s passcode screen when you’re connected to specific Wi-Fi networks, which can be useful if you’re in a low-risk environment, such as your house, where you don’t expect anyone will be trying to get into your device.
In case you’re curious about how some of these features work, the developer provided the following demonstration video:
After you’ve installed NotifyWiFi X on your device, you’ll find a well-planned preference pane in the Settings app where you can configure the tweak to your needs:
Here, you can:
- Toggle NotifyWiFi X on or off on demand
- Enable sound and vibration when a NotifyWiFi X banner notification materializes
- Copy the Wi-Fi network’s SSID to your clipboard upon connection
- Save a history log of all previously-connected Wi-Fi networks and view them any time
- Configure how and when NotifyWiFi X banner notifications appear
- Choose what happens when you tap a NotifyWiFi X banner: open Wi-Fi settings or NotifyWiFi X settings
- White list specific Wi-Fi networks to prevent notifications and to disable passcode authentication when connected
- Black list specific Wi-Fi networks to turn Wi-Fi off automatically when connected
- Configure a swipe down to clear gesture
- Issue a test notification to see what one looks like
- Adjust more custom Wi-Fi settings details
- Reset all settings to their defaults
Below, we’ve outlined more of the tweak’s in-depth settings for your convenience:
White List
- Toggle skipping the passcode on or off when connected to these Wi-Fi networks
- Enter up to five Wi-Fi network SSIDs to your White List
Black List
- Toggle disabling Wi-Fi on or off when connected to these Wi-Fi networks
- Toggle displaying an alert when Wi-Fi is turned off because of this feature
- Enter up to ten Wi-Fi network SSIDs to your Black List
Wi-Fi Settings
- Display notifications relating to Wi-Fi
- Enable Pull to Refresh in the Wi-Fi preference pane
- Show a list of known Wi-Fi networks in the Wi-Fi preference pane
- Disable iOS’ native RSSI limit to display Wi-Fi networks with a weaker signal
- Show Wi-Fi network MAC addresses in the Wi-Fi network list
- Show the Wi-Fi security type in the Wi-Fi network list
- Disable the RSSI signal strength in the Wi-Fi network list
As you can see for yourself, NotifyWiFi X is no slouch on configuration, and you can do some amazing Wi-Fi oriented things with this tweak if you care about augmenting your iOS device’s Wi-Fi capabilities or protecting your privacy.
If you’re interested in trying NotifyWiFi X, then you can download it from Cydia’s Packix repository for $1.00. The tweak supports all jailbroken iOS 11 and 12 devices but may conflict with other jailbreak tweaks such as Passby and GoodWiFi.
