$2,600 Huawei folding phone makes Samsung’s look cheap

When jaws dropped at the $1,980 price of Samsung’s first folding phone, Huawei said “Hold my beer.” The Chinese company just took the wraps of its own flexible handset that will go for a mind-blowing €2,299 (roughly $2,600).
Of course, the Mate X is loaded with truly cutting-edge features, especially a 6.6-inch screen that opens to 8 inches. There’s also 5G.
If nothing else, these two models should cut down on the criticism of the price of the iPhone XS Max, which looks relatively cheap at a mere $1,099.

Samsung’s Galaxy Fold keeps its 7.3-inch main display on the inside. Huawei’s larger flexible screen wraps around the front and back so it’s ways exposed. And always available: this all-around design allows users to take selfies with the rear-facing camera.
Also unlike Samsung’s offering, the Mate X folds flat. It’s just 0.43 inches (11 mm) thick when folded closed. There’s still room for a 4,500mAH battery and a triple-lens camera, plus 8GB of RAM and 512GB of storage.
Many of the other specs of this device remain a mystery. Huawei showed it off today at the Mobile World Congress (MWC) trade show in Barcelona but wouldn’t let journalists touch it. The speed of the Kirin 980 processor is unknown, as well as the capabilities of its cameras.
The Mate X is promised around the middle of this year. That’s still well ahead of wide-spread 5G service around the world, though. Users of this model will probably have to wait until 2020 for that.
Unconfirmed reports indicate Apple has no plans for a folding iPhone before 2020. Gobsmackinly high prices could be one reason.
