Following quite a few beta releases of iOS 12.2, Apple has gone ahead and released the final public version of the OS. Unlike the last few iOS releases, iOS 12.2 comes with a number of new features and changes. It is a major point release that enhances a number of existing iOS features.
iOS 12.2 adds support for a number of upcoming hardware products from Apple including AirPods 2 and new iPads. It also brings Apple News+ to iPhone and iPad owners in the United States and Canada.

iOS 12.2: What’s New
Apple News+
iOS 12.2 updates the Apple News app to add support for Apple News+. The $9.99/month magazine and digital subscription service is only available in the United States and Canada for now.
New Animoji
Apple has introduced four new Animoji in iOS 12.2. This includes a boar, shark, giraffe, and an owl. This brings the total number of Animoji in iOS 12 to 24.
HomeKit TV Support and Controls
Apple announced AirPlay 2 support for third-party TVs from the likes of Vizio and Samsung earlier this year. iOS 12.2 adds HomeKit support for AirPlay 2 TVs.
Updated Screen Mirroring Icon in Control Center
Apple has updated the Screen Mirroring icon in Control Center, making it a bit more obvious that you are mirroring two screens.
Faster Way to Add Money to Apple Cash
Apple has added an “Add Money” option when you tap on the Apple Pay Cash in the Wallet app. This makes it easier to quickly add funds.
A New AirPlay Icon
Apple has updated the AirPlay icon in Control Center, putting it more in line with the icon on other platforms like macOS.
Updated Wallet App
Apple has updated the Wallet app in iOS 12.2 to show one’s recent transactions sorted as per the year.
Apple Shows Better Info for Unsecure Websites
Apple now shows “Not Secured” on an unsecured website in the URL, making it more obvious that a site isn’t offering an HTTPS connection.
Apple Maps Can Now Show Air Quality
You can find air quality for an area within the stock Weather app, but Apple is now bringing that information to Apple Maps. It can be turned on in the Maps Settings section.
New Apple TV Remote Design
The app now has a darker interface.
Apple News Logo Tweak
Apple News has been tweaked a bit, at least as far as the logo is concerned. Now instead of spelling out “Apple News”, the company uses its very familiar logo instead. That brings it in line with the Apple TV and Apple Pay.
Apple News in Canada
iOS 12.2 also expands Apple News to Canada. News sources will be available in English and French to readers.
Changes to the About Screen
Apple has changed the About screen within the Settings app. Sections are now present, making finding key information a bit easier.
Improved Audio Messages Quality in iMessage
The audio messages quality in iOS 12.2 has received a major upgrade. Apple has switched from AMR codec to new Opus codec at 24000 Hz which has led to a considerable improvement in audio quality.
5G for AT&T Users!
If you own a recent iPhone and are on AT&T’s network, you might see a ‘5G E’ icon in the status bar after updating to iOS 12.2. Don’t be fooled by it though thinking that the update has added 5G support to your iPhone. That’s not the case and your iPhone is still connected to AT&T’s LTE network.
Updated Downtime Feature in Screen Time
iOS 12.2 will allow users to set Downtime options on a day-to-day basis. Previously, it was only possible to trigger Downtime during specified days and time.
Logitech Crayon Support for iPad Pro
iOS 12.2 will add support for Logitech Crayon stylus to the 2018 iPad Pro lineup.
