Robocalling is a serious issue, with hundreds of thousands of these spam calls going out regularly. Verizon is aiming to alleviate some of the pressure.
On Thursday, Verizon Wireless, officially announced that it is rolling out a free version of its “Call Filter” feature for subscribers. With Call Filter, Verizon customers will have a free option to identify, screen, and block spam phone calls. Verizon’s Call Filter has been around for quite some time already, but the big red carrier has typically charged $2.99 per month.
Verizon is going to keep charging that amount on a monthly basis for some features baked into Call Filter. That includes a personal list of spam numbers, Caller ID, a risk meter that shows how spammy an incoming call might be, an ability to lookup numbers, and a block list. The free part will come with number reporting, filtering, and spam detection.
So while Verizon is offering some part of the Call Filter feature for free, if you want the whole suite of features available to you you’ll need to fork over a bit of cash every month.
“The company’s free Call Filter product offers wireless customers new protection from robocalls. With it, customers can get alerts when a call is likely spam, report unsolicited numbers, and automatically block robocalls based on their preferred level of risk. All postpaid wireless customers with a compatible device can enroll, though certain features will vary based on the type of phone that a customer has.”
The new free version of Call Filter is available now for Verizon Wireless subscribers. You can find a link to download the app below, which is a free installation.

Our Take
All of these features should be free, full stop. No hiding them behind monthly payments. As bad as robocalling is, the wireless carriers need to offer up free tools to help customers reduce them.
