Long before Black Mirror: Bandersnatch became a must-watch movie on Netflix, there was another unique choose your own adventure movie experience. Arriving for the Apple TV and iOS devices in 2016, Late Shift combined a movie and game as players drove the story with the choices made.
And the the publisher behind that title is out with a new interactive gaming experience with a big supernatural twist. The Shapeshifting Detective is not your usual murder mystery.
At the start of the game, 21-year-old Dortha Shaw is found dead in the town of August. You are sent by a mysterious figure to the town to help solve the murder while not getting caught.
The prime suspects are three tarot card readers. But finding the killer won’t be easy. The big twist is that you can shapeshift into one of nine different other characters to unlock the whole story.
There are more than 1,600 different video responses in the in the game. You can interact with the characters in a question and answer interface. A unique feature is the ability to delete questions that you don’t want to ask or answer.
To help the replayability, the murder is chosen at random from one of three options at the start of each new game.
I’m just a few minutes into the game, and have definitely enjoyed the experience. The acting and videos are high-quality and make you feel like you’re truly in the adventure. I’m interested to see how the entire game turns out and if I can catch the murderer.
Designed for the iPhone and all iPad models, The Shapeshifting Detective can be downloaded now on the App Store for $4.99.
