Some 5G-enabled smartphones coming down the pipe will cost a bit more than their 4G LTE counterparts, but it looks like T-Mobile wants to keep data plan pricing the same.

T-Mobile’s Chief Technology Officer Neville Ray had a chat with PC Mag recently, and talked about future pricing for 5G plans. The company has said it will not raise prices for at least three years if its merger with Sprint is approved. That was the primary focal point of the conversation now. But that lack of change in pricing also extends to 5G plans.

Once 5G is up and running across the United States, T-Mobile says that it will continue to offer unlimited plans on the faster network. If all of this pans out, that means T-Mobile’s starter 5G unlimited plan could retail for $70 per month — taxes and fees included. Or, T-Mobile may start pricing at $85 per month. That price is what the Un-carrier charges for its T-Mobile One Plus plan, which features LTE hotspot and HD streaming.

T-Mobile does plan on rolling out some of its 5G network in the early part of this year. However, the company’s big push for the faster wireless technology won’t happen until the second half of 2019. Sprint, while not having as fast a 5G network as the other carriers, plans on launching its 5G service in May.

One has to hope that the other wireless networks follow T-Mobile in this regard. And that T-Mobile actually keeps its word. Just because the networks are upgrading doesn’t mean customers should burden that cost.
