Samsung’s $400 Galaxy Tab S5e Is Thinner and Lighter Than the iPad Pro

Given Apple dominance in the tablet market and the dire state of Android on tablets, one would have believed that Android OEMs would have given up on the segment. While most of them have, Samsung is still trying. The company today unveiled the $400 Galaxy Tab S5e and despite its mid-range price tag, the tablet gives the 11-inch iPad Pro a run for its money by being thinner and lighter than it.

At 5.5mm and 400gms, the Galaxy Tab S5e is thinner and lighter than the 11-inch iPad Pro which is 5.9mm thick and 468gms heavy. It is also Samsung’s thinnest Galaxy tablet yet.

Despite its budget price tag, the Galaxy Tab S5e comes with a 10.5-inch Super AMOLED (2560 x 1600) display. Its body-to-display ratio is also almost as good as the 11-inch iPad Pro.

While the Galaxy Tab S5e will give the iPad Pro a run in the design and build quality department, it will lose out to the latter in the performance department. The tablet is powered by an octa-core Snapdragon 670 chipset. This makes the tablet good enough for basic tasks and content consumption, but heavy gaming and photo/video editing are out of the question.

Other specs of the Galaxy Tab S5e include 4/6GB RAM, 64/128GB storage, microSD card slot, Wi-Fi ac, Bluetooth 5.0, fingerprint scanner, face unlock, up to 14.5 hours of battery life with fast charging support, AKG-tuned quad surround stereo speakers and more. At the rear, there’s a 13MP shooter while an 8MP shooter is located at the front.

On the software front, the tablet runs on Android 9.0 Pie. It comes with Bixby 2.0 and DeX which allows it to act as a full blown desktop when connected to an external monitor + keyboard/mouse.

The Galaxy Tab S5e will launch in Q2 2019 for $400. The LTE variant will carry a higher price tag. Samsung will also launch a 6GB RAM/128GB storage variant of the tablet. It will be available in black, grey, and a limited edition gold color.

The Galaxy Tab S5e gives the 11-inch iPad Pro in the design department while offering almost the same level of performance as the 2017 9.7-inch iPad. And at $400, getting such a high-resolution OLED display is a steal, especially if you want a device only for content consumption. What do you think?
