If you’ve ever used iOS 6 or earlier, then you’re undoubtedly familiar with a very different Home screen folder interface that you’re using today. I can’t exactly say that I enjoy the newer folder format better than the older one, and for that reason, I’m excited to talk about a jailbreak tweak called ClassicFolders 2 by iOS developers CoolStar and Jeremy Goulet.
The primary reason that you would want to install ClassicFolders 2 is if you miss the classic Home screen folder interface and you want to use it again on your jailbroken iOS 7-12 device. This tweak works quite well, and it even includes a few bells and whistles to give it an aesthetic appeal such as blurred background modes that match iOS’ modern-day appearance.
In the screenshot examples above, you’ll see that ClassicFolders 2 reverts the modern full-screen folder interface back to the now-extinct split-screen folder interface. In my personal opinion, this always looked better than the current-day folder interface.
ClassicFolders 2 also adds a preference pane to the Settings app where you can configure it to your liking:
Here, you can:
- Enable or disable the tweak on demand
- Choose the Home screen folder background that you’d like to use
- Choose whether the Home screen wallpaper becomes burred after launch or not
- Configure a custom animation speed (50% by default)
- Enable or disable the dark tint effect
- Use the classic folder icon instead of the modern one
- Enable or disable the icon outline
- Enable or disable the classic icon shape
The developers provide a Respring button at the bottom of the preference pane that you’ll want to use to ensure that your settings get saved upon making them.
To be clear, ClassicFolders 2 is only intended for those with nostalgia for the older Home screen folders, and if you actually like what Apple has done with them in newer versions of iOS, then this won’t be the tweak for you. It’s also worth noting that ClassicFolders 2 will work on all jailbroken iOS 7-12 devices, but on iOS 11 and iOS 12, it only officially supports the Electra and Chimera jailbreaks.
If you’re interested in trying ClassicFolders 2, then you can download it for $1.99 from the Packix repository in Cydia or Sileo. If you already own the previous version of ClassicFolders 2, then you can download the latest version with iOS 12 support free of charge. Those who own the original ClassicFolders will still need to purchase the newer ClassicFolders 2 tweak.
