Apple has a variety of TV series and films in the works for its upcoming Apple TV+ subscription service. One of those is a new series based on Isaac Asimov’s Foundation, which was being run by David S. Goyer and Josh Friedman. At least, that was the case until the latter left the project.

In most of the reports surrounding Apple TV+ it’s all about people joining projects and launching content on the service. Not today. As was first reported by The Wrap, Josh Friedman has officially left the project as co-showrunner. And while Friedman has departed the day-to-day routine as co-showrunner, he won’t be leaving the long-gestating project altogether. Instead, Friedman will be serving as an executive producer from this point on.

“Friedman has stepped down from day-to-day responsibility on the show, but will remain attached as executive producer. Co-writer David S. Goyer will remain on board as the sole showrunner on the Skydance Television-produced series.”

Goyer will remain as the lead writer and showrunner for the upcoming series.

Apple’s Foundation will be a 10-episode series that spans Asimov’s series of novels. The original story follows a thousand-year story of The Foundation, a group that is primarily tasked with preventing repeated dark ages due to war after the fall of the Galactic Empire. The TV series has been floated for quite some time, with different parties attached to bring it to life. However, it wasn’t until Apple picked up the project that it started to really gain momentum.

Friedman previously created the series Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles. While he has left the Foundation project, he will now be focusing on writing the script for James Cameron’s upcoming Avatar sequel(s).
