Microsoft Bringing Xbox Live to iOS and Android for Cross-Platform Multiplayer Gaming
Microsoft is looking to bring its cross-platform gaming service, Xbox Live, to iOS, Android, and Nintendo Switch. The company has not made any official announcement about the same but a GDC 2019 session schedule points to Xbox Live getting “much bigger.”
GDC 2019 is scheduled to take place next month on March 18 which is when we are going to see Microsoft announce that Xbox Live is coming to iOS and Android.
Game developers will be able to integrate Xbox Live in friend lists, achievements, and multiplayer gaming of their games using the new XDK. Xbox Live integration in games outside of Microsoft Studio and Windows PCs will also tie in nicely with Microsoft’s rumored xCloud game streaming service that’s expected to launch later this year.
Xbox Live is one of the largest, most engaged gaming communities on the planet with decades of experience providing managed game services to developers that save you time and unlock all of the social and engagement features that players love.
Now Xbox Live is about to get MUCH bigger. Xbox Live is expanding from 400M gaming devices and a reach to over 68M active players to over 2B devices with the release of our new cross-platform XDK.
Get a first look at the SDK to enable game developers to connect players between iOS, Android, and Switch in addition to Xbox and any game in the Microsoft Store on Windows PCs.
The only notable game that allows for true cross-platform gaming is Epic Games’ Fortnite. By bringing Xbox Live to all major platforms out there, Microsoft is looking to enable a similar cross-play gaming experience. Once the proper SDK is released, it would be up to the developers to integrate Xbox Live in their games.
What do you think about Microsoft bringing Xbox Live integration to iOS games? Are you excited about the possible cross-platform multiplayer gaming experience it would enable?
