Apple may have never gotten around to releasing the AirPower but the company inadvertently ended up increasing the ceiling for wireless chargers. Since AirPower, we have seen a number of wireless chargers hit the market featuring 4-5 charging coils and claim to charge multiple devices at once. Choetech — a Chinese company known for its chargers and other smartphone accessories — recently released the 360-degree 5-coil dual fast wireless charging pad. In this review, I take a look at how good this wireless charger is and whether it lives up to its claim of being able to simultaneously charge two devices or not.
The Dual charging pad from Choetech is no AirPower replacement. It is a simple charging pad which claims to charge two devices at once. It has a maximum output of 18W which means you can wirelessly fast charge two iPhones wirelessly or one Samsung smartphone and one iPhone at their full capacity.
The Good
Most wireless chargers feature 3 charging coils but the charging pad from Choetech features 5 coils. This allows it to charge two smartphones at once but it also gives it another advantage. You just need to place your phone on the charger for the power transfer to occur. There’s no need to ensure that your phone’s wireless charging coil is aligning with the charger’s coil.
On most wireless chargers, you will have to ensure that you put your phone in the ‘sweet’ spot — the charging coil of the smartphone and the wireless charger must align for the power transfer to occur. If the alignment is not perfect, your phone will not charge wirelessly despite sitting on the wireless charger for hours. There have been quite a few instances when I put my iPhone or Samsung smartphone on the wireless charger before going to sleep only to wake up next day and find that since it was not positioned properly, it was never charged.
If this is something you face on a regular basis, my recommendation would be to buy the Choetech Dual Wireless Charging pad even if you don’t have two devices to charge at once. The very fact that you don’t need to bother about placing your phone properly on the charger is a huge win from a convenience aspect.
In terms of build quality, there’s really not much to talk about. The plastic used at the base of the charger feels a bit tacky but that’s something most people are not going to notice once they place the charger on their desk or bedside table. There are also exhaust vents at the bottom of the charger to dissipate heat efficiently. The top of the charging pad has a non-slippery finish to ensure your phone does not slip off the charger if you use it without a case. Choetech further sweetens the deal by including a Quick Charge 3.0 18W charger and USB-C cable in the box.
The Bad
With its 5-coil setup, this Choetech charging pad supports charging two smartphones at once. The bummer is that it cannot charge other accessories like the Apple Watch or the AirPods wirelessly. Choetech is working on a new charging pad with a 6-coil design that would be capable of doing this but that is yet to be released.
Sure, the build quality could have been better but once you factor in the price of the charger, you really can’t complain about it. Plus, the charging surface itself is good which is what ultimately matters.
At $35.99, the Choetech Wireless Charging Pad is considerably cheaper than other wireless chargers which can charge multiple smartphones at once. It is not perfect any means and the lack of wireless charging support for the Apple Watch or other similar accessories is a major bummer. However, if you need to charge multiple iPhones or smartphones at once wirelessly, this charger is a no brainer at this price.
