According to the latest research note from reliable Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, Apple’s iPhone lineup for 2019 will significantly boost the resolution of your selfies by upgrading the front camera on all models from the current seven-megapixel shooter to a twelve-megapixel sensor.
Swapping the current sensor for a twelve-megapixel one would yield a seventy percent increase in pixel count, resulting in sharper, more detailed selfies.
Indian website CompareRaja reported in January that the next iPhones would feature a ten-megapixel front camera and a fourteen-megapixel rear setup.
Successors to the 6.1-inch iPhone XR, 5.8-inch iPhone XS, 6.5-inch iPhone XS Max will include other camera-related improvements, like a three-lens setup on the back comprised of a telephoto lens, a wide-angle lens and a super-wide-angle lens. All three lenses will have a resolution of twelve megapixels and be supplied by Sony.
The iPhone XR successor will feature a dual-lens rear setup instead of the current single-lens twelve-megapixel shooter, but Kuo had nothing to say in terms of resolution.
Here’s an excerpt from the analysts’s note:
We forecast the camera upgrade will be one of the new 2019 iPhone’s major selling points. Critical spec upgrades are as follows.
(1) Rear cameras of 6.5-inch OLED, 5.8-inch OLED, and 6.1-inch LCD will likely upgrade to triple-camera and dual-camera, respectively. A super-wide camera will be newly adopted by the triple-camera system, which is equipped with the 12MP/1um CIS provided exclusively by Sony.
(2) The front camera of all three new iPhone models will likely upgrade to 12MP CIS+5P lens (vs. current 7MP CIS+4P lens).
The increased pixel count on the selfie camera of all three phones will be paired with a five-element lens instead of the current four-element lens, resulting in better optical quality.
In another curious tidbit, the noted analyst wrote that the new super-wide-angle rear camera and the improved front camera on the 2019 iPhone XS and iPhone XS Max models will feature black lens-coating technologies that will make the lenses look “inconspicuous,” but it’s not very clear what that might entail.
