AirPods 2 Work With Jailbroken iPhones Running iOS 12 – iOS 12.1.2

When Apple launched AirPods 2 last week, the press release mentioned that the Bluetooth buds required iOS 12.2 to work properly. For folks using a jailbroken iPhone running iOS 12 – iOS 12.1.2, this was definitely disappointing news as this meant they could not use the 2nd gen AirPods with their device.

As it turns out though, that’s not really the case. The 2nd generation AirPods do work on iPhones and iPads running iOS 12 – 12.1.1 albeit with one key feature missing.

While one will be able to enjoy wireless charging, better battery life, lower latency, and slightly better audio quality with AirPods 2 on their jailbroken iPhone, they will have to miss out on always-on “Hey Siri” detection. Given that Siri is not that useful, I doubt many jailbroken iPhone users are going to complain about it.

As the screenshot above shows, you will get a prompt when setting up the AirPods 2 that some features require one to update to the latest version of iOS. However, one can skip updating their iPhone to the latest iOS release by selecting the ‘Set up with limited functionality’ option.

Given that one can buy the wireless charging case separately for the first-gen AirPods as well, it does mean that you don’t really get the benefits of buying the AirPods 2. Nonetheless, some folks are still going to value having a jailbroken iPhone with a compromised AirPods 2 experience.
