Samsung announced not only the Galaxy S10 lineup, but also the foldable Galaxy Fold smartphone. But that’s not all for the company today.
The primary competitor to Apple has also unveiled new wearables, which are all meant to take on Apple’s own efforts in this category. Specifically, Apple’s truly wireless AirPods now have even more competition with the Galaxy Buds. And the Apple Watch now has the Galaxy Watch Active to compete with.
First, the Galaxy Buds. These truly wireless headphones are designed to be an “in-ear lifestyle companion”, and that starts with being able to use your voice to access pertinent information and more. Future owners will be able to ask Bixby, Samsung’s own digital personal assistant, to check the battery life on their headphones, send text messages, make voice calls, and more.
Samsung says the battery life will last six hours with continuous music listening, or about five hours on a phone call. The charging case can provide 1.7 hours of listening time with just 15 minutes of charging. And the case itself holds a charge for up to seven hours. The case also supports wireless charging and “device-to-device power sharing”, which means if you pick up the Galaxy S10 you can wirelessly charge the case with direct contact with the phone itself.
“Galaxy Buds offer a supreme listening experience, with sound by AKG. Enhanced Ambient Sound allows you to hear your surroundings clearly even while the buds are in your ears, so you can remain aware of your environment at the same time as you take a phone call or listen to your favorite tunes. Premium sound extends to the sound of your voice, as well. The Adaptive Dual Microphone uses one inner microphone and one outer microphone in each earbud, so you can deliver your voice clearly in both loud and quiet environments.”
The Galaxy Buds will be available in Blue, Black, and Green. They go up for sale on March 8 (the same day as the Galaxy S10), and will cost $129.99.
In addition to the new truly wireless headphones, Samsung also unveiled the Galaxy Watch Active. This feature a 1.1-inch circular AMOLED display with a resolution of 360×360. It features a 20mm interchangeable strap, a 230mAh battery, and an Exynos 9110 dual-core processor clocked at 1.15GHz. There is 768MB of RAM on board, along with 4GB of built-in storage.
The Galaxy Active Watch features NFC and Bluetooth 4.2, along with Wi-Fi b/g/n and A-GPS/Glonass. It supports wireless charging as well. You will need these devices to support the Galaxy Active Watch:
- Samsung Galaxy, Android 5.0 or above with more than 1.5GB RAM
- iPhone: iPhone 5 and above, iOS 9.0 or above
Samsung’s newest smartwatch will be available in Sea Green, Rose Gold, Black, and Silver. It is priced at $200, and it will launch on March 8.
