While we all hope the devices we buy will work right out of the box, and keep working for years to come (or at least until we sell it off/trade it in), sometimes things happen. Tech breaks. And according to a new report, some Apple Watch Series 2 repairs can actually net a full replacement with a Series 3.

The initial report comes from MacRumors on Monday, based on internal documentation viewed by the publication. Those documents were shared with Apple Stores and Authorized Service providers on Monday. There are some caveats, of course.

Namely, Apple notes in the document that an Apple Watch Series 3 requires an iPhone that supports watchOS 4 or later. As such, the technicians and Apple Store employees are told to remind iPhone 5 and iPhone 5c owners of that fact, suggesting an upgrade to the iPhone they are using. This is only available for 38mm Apple Watch Series 2 devices.

However, if the customer does not want to, or cannot, upgrade to a newer iPhone model they will be instructed to contact Apple Support and request a refund.

The reason for the change? A shortage of an unspecified part. And while the notice says this is a change that will be in place “until further notice”, there is no telling how long it might be present. So if you have a 38mm Apple Watch Series 2 that has a repair issue, it might be worth taking it into an authorized repair shop and seeing if you can get an upgrade.
