The new Mac Pro 2019 was just announced and shown off at the WWDC19 event. However, instead of seeing a new design, we see a comeback of a lot of features, sporting some new ones.
The new top-of-the-line Mac Pro 2019 sports an Intel Xeon with up to as much as 28 cores that get a whole 300 watts dedicated to them. The CPU will be accompanied by a “massive heatsink” for optimal thermal cooling. However, if that sounds crazy to you, just wait for what’s coming.
The new Mac Pro can be upgraded to as much as 1.5 terabytes, that’s 1,500 gigabytes, of total system memory. That’s 1500GB of RAM. This is all thanks to the 6 memory channels that support up to 12 DIMM modules clocked at up to 2933MHz.
This is all accompanied with PCIe expansion allowing you to use existing PC hardware with the new Mac Pro, however, the manufacturer may need to release drivers for it first. You can add things like sound cards, and, yes, GPU’s. But you might not want to.
That’s because the new Mac will include Apple’s MPX Module support. MPX stands for “Mac Pro Extension” and is what the name suggests. There will be options from AMD Radeon Pro 580X, up to an AMD Radeon Pro Vega II for more performance. But that’s not all. A single MPX module can include dual GPU’s with Thunderbolt capabilities. That is still not all. You can have two of those too, lifting the performance to an extreme level with up to 56 teraflops of power and 128GB of Video RAM. For comparison, a single Radeon Pro Vega II has 32GB of Video RAM and 14 teraflops.
If you’re a video editor, excited to hear the news, fasten your seatbelt because you’re in for a ride. The new Mac Pro will support a new “Afterburner” PCIe expansion that will allow the Mac to chew trough editing 3 8K streams at once like it’s nothing or even 12 4K streams. This all comes in a quiet and cool chassis that looks a lot like the pre-2012 Mac Pros from the past.
Oh, it also features optional wheels.
