AirPods (2nd Gen) Was to Go on Sale Last Year, New AirPods with Noise-Cancellation Still In the Works

The 2nd generation AirPods are going to leave a lot of people disappointed. While they do bring some improvements to the table, most interested customers were hoping for a bigger upgrade and they are going to find such modest changes underwhelming. As per @markgurman of Bloomberg, Apple had initially planned to launch the 2nd generation AirPods last year itself.

However, due to some unforeseen circumstances, the company had to delay the release. The company is also working on a version of AirPods with noise-cancellation and water resistance. They were originally planned to be unveiled later this year but due to the delayed unveiling of the 2nd generation AirPods, their launch is going to be likely pushed back as well.

Ideally, if you already own the 1st gen AirPods, there’s little reason for you to upgrade to the new AirPods. At best, you can consider buying the $79 wireless charging case and be done with it. The 2nd gen AirPods don’t offer any such massive upgrade that you should consider ditching your working pair of AirPods for it.

The 2nd generation AirPods do not fix any of the gripes of the original AirPods. This includes lack of water-resistance and a poor fit in the ear.

It looks like for a major AirPods refresh, folks will have to wait until next year when Apple might get around to releasing AirPods with active noise cancellation and water-resistance.
